Sense of Entitlement

I used to think I was entitled
To gold, power, and a crown of laurel leaves.
I used to think that because I wrote
With some eloquence, the world would take a knee for me.
I used to think I had a voice sweeter than honey,
And the world would lap it up like dogs.
I used to think that because
I could make words rhyme
I could also make them dance,
But folks, believe me,
My rhymes were dead in the water,
My words sank like quicksand.
You see, because...a sense of entitlement only comes
With a big pile of cash
And another sense much worse than entitlement--
A sense of lovelessness, and shame.
Well the truth is you can't buy love
And you can't extinguish shame with anything you can buy.
So what can you do?
Give the money away and express yourself honestly.
Then the gold, power and crown of laurel leaves
Will come your way.
