Killing the Conscience

Conscience commanded the flesh to act,
But flesh refused, and conscience fought back:
Such pain and suffering the flesh endured
To withstand the conscience, which was but a word.
But the flesh soon discovered the power of song,
And silenced the conscience, which lived on
