On a Friend Long-Dead

He was the best and the worst of us

And everything in between.

He left behind his debts

And what he payed to us—

These amounted to just about the same.

Some say his life was tragic

But I can’t help smiling when I think of him.

He didn’t know much,

But much could be learned from his life

If only we could take it seriously.

Siege

On all sides, I surrounded her

And let forth such a siege

That left my castle empty.

Swords of steel hit solid rock,

Arrows shot well short of their mark,

Without catapult or ram to batter,

Luckless fools my soldier-words.

A vain attempt at attrition

With all my forces engaged,

Her spies—her eyes—snuck through,

Reached my castle

And set it ablaze.

Autumn Rain

Long summer. Days long and hot

Through late September and now,

Rain drowns out all plans that

Through summer were delayed.

To go out of doors is to feel the burden

Of laziness’ retribution, to get wet,

As if water weren’t just water but

The weight of sky unable to hold itself up.

Inside, I am listless, no stories to tell,

Just the thought of cleaning is a living Hell.

I find myself in bed, sheets all unkempt.

Autumn is here, my eyes are dimmed

With too many seasons seen,

Like the sky, and rain falls

In place of forsaken tears.
